The Best Reading Lamp

Pip makes the best reading lamp… but Luna says the book…

Kiki in her starry lolita dress reading a picture book in a big armchair in Star Library, Luna asleep on a stack of books and Pip glowing nearby

The Star Library never really closes. When the moon comes up, the candles light themselves, and the books on the highest shelves start to hum very softly, as if they were reading to each other.

Kiki picked a picture book about a girl who could talk to the moon. She climbed into the big squishy armchair by the round window and opened it on her lap.

“It’s a little dark,” she said.

Pip drifted down beside the armchair and glowed a bit brighter, just enough to make the pictures shine. Pip is very good at being a reading lamp. He has had lots of practice.

Luna, meanwhile, had found a stack of old storybooks that was exactly the right height for a nap. She did not read a single page, and she looked very peaceful about it.

Kiki turned the page. Outside the window, the moon seemed to lean in for a closer look.

Pip spotted: Down beside the armchair, glowing like a little lamp.
